Electric Balance Bike for Kids: The Easiest Way to Start Motorcycling

Why electric balance bikes are the perfect first step for little riders

Did you know that children as young as two can already start experiencing the joy of two wheels? Electric balance bikes — small, battery-powered versions of push bikes — are a fun, safe, and confidence-building way to introduce kids to motorcycling.

Why Start With an Electric Balance Bike?

One motocross rider and parent explained why he chose this path for his son:

“I wanted my boy to have the chance to ride with other kids and learn in a safe, playful environment. If something doesn’t exist, sometimes you just have to create it yourself!”

Electric balance bikes are lightweight (often under 10 kg), easy to handle, and allow kids to learn throttle control at very low speeds. They’re much lighter than small petrol-powered motorcycles, which can weigh around 40 kg.

Building Confidence, Step by Step

According to the rider, the real advantage is that children can practice motor skills naturally:

“An electric balance bike gives a child early throttle awareness. The twist grip works just like a real motorcycle, but the bike is light and forgiving. If they fall, nothing really happens.”

His son first received a bike at just 18 months old. At first it sat untouched. But one day, just before his second birthday, the boy simply picked it up and started riding on his own.

“I never pushed him into it. Kids should decide themselves. When he was ready, he just got on and rode away.”

Choosing the Right Model

The family’s first bike had 12-inch wheels and a soft, slow throttle response. Later they upgraded to a sharper 16-inch model.

“The small one was perfect for starting out — slow and safe, with two speed options. When we moved up to the 16-inch bike, he already had the skills, but that one was powerful enough to really test him.”

He also noted the price:

“The 12-inch bike was affordable, around €300–400. There’s no point in buying a super-expensive model right away. What if your kid isn’t interested? Start simple.”

Let Kids Discover Their Passion

One of the most important lessons is not to force it.

“Put the bike next to their other toys — the ball, the shovel, the bucket. Let them choose. If they don’t want to ride, that’s fine. But if they do, the opportunity is there.”

Whether or not a child grows into motocross or road riding, electric balance bikes are an excellent way to build balance, coordination, and confidence from an early age.

For parents looking to introduce their children to motorcycling, an electric balance bike is one of the easiest and safest starting points. Lightweight, affordable, and fun, it allows kids to explore the thrill of two wheels at their own pace — and with a big smile on their face.
